Getting Over Bloggers Block/ Reviving Your Blogging Mojo

Have you ever experienced the dreaded 'bloggers block'? If you've been blogging for a significant amount of time, chances are you have. Whether you've run out of content ideas, have run out of motivation or the words just aren't coming to you very easily- it's something that can knock your confidence a bit and make your question your abilities as a blogger. Bloggers block isn't something I ever experienced until around January this year and it hit me hard; I think after the stress of moving house over Christmas coupled with rubbish light (making my pictures look awful) I found it difficult getting the ideas from my head onto the page. When you're juggling a blog with a multitude of other commitments, it's inevitable that there are going to be times when it can become a bit of a struggle. But if you're in the midst of a bloggers block crisis, or just feel as though your blog isn't progressing the way that you want then fear not. These things will eventually pass, and as long as you work through it rather than throw in the towel it can make you a much more determined blogger when you reach the other side.

Give Yourself a Break
I don't just mean take a break from your blog (although that can be helpful too), I mean cut yourself some slack. Blogging is NOT an easy hobby, producing great content takes time, effort and passion- but it should still be something that you enjoy doing. If it's starting to feel like a chore where you're pressuring yourself to write a certain number of weekly posts, gain a certain amount of followers or publish a post by a certain time each day then it might be time to step back and take a breather. Accept that there are going to be times when other commitments mean you can't post as often as you'd like, accept that there are going to be times that bad lighting will make your photos look rubbish and accept that even if you sit down at the computer with the best intentions of writing up a post sometimes the words just wont come freely to you. Don't force it- if you chalk it up to a bad blogging day and come back to it at a later point, you'll be much less likely to get into a vicious cycle of not posting and doubting yourself.

Continue to Consume Content
If your blogger's block has come about because you've run out of ideas- reading other blogs, watching Youtube videos or flicking through a magazine can be all it takes to spark off an idea. While you should never copy someone else and stay true to your own blog and ideas, there's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from what other people have created.

Do Something New
New experiences will refresh your mind, and might be just what you need to recharge your creative energy. Going to a festival for the weekend for example might give you the idea to share your overnight beauty essentials, or an outfit post. Getting ready for a day at the beach might spur you on to share your favourite waterproof beauty products. Inspiration can come from the strangest places, and so even if it has absolutely nothing to do with your blog go out there and do something different.

Go Shopping
This of course isn't the answer in every case, but if you're in need of a bit of a shopping trip anyway then having some new products to try out and write about will give you material for reviews. If this isn't an option check out my post here- I shared ten blog post ideas that you can write without spending a penny.

Write When You Feel Like It
Structure is a wonderful thing. As a self confessed organisation-a-holic (is that a thing? It is now) I'm all about organising and planning. However when it comes to writing this just doesn't work for me. Sometimes I'll stare at the screen waiting for the magic to happen and it never does: you know those times where you sit and write a sentence, reword it, delete it, write it again then delete the whole lot and give up? This tends to happen when I'm trying to force it, and it's annoying as there are days where I have the time to get so much done but my brain has other ideas. This goes back to my first point- cut yourself some slack. If you accept that sometimes this does happen, then you're less likely to have a minor breakdown and start to believe that your blogging mojo has escaped forever. My best ideas usually come about at the most inconvenient times (usually 3am) and I'll often write up massive chunks of posts then. I appreciate it isn't ideal, but we're only human at the end of the day and sometimes you have to just go with the flow. What I'm trying to say here is that if you just write when you feel the urge (rather than force yourself to sit down and write something amazing for an hour everyday before Eastenders) then you'll probably find it comes to you a lot more easily.

Write Down Ideas When You Have Them
Leading on from my last point, if it's not an option to write when the mood strikes at least jot down the basic ideas somewhere so you can go back to it later. Whether you jot them down in a notebook, on a post-it note or my personal method of saving the title and basic information into a draft post. Even if you have no intention of writing up the post any time soon, that idea is safely stored away and could be enough to get you back into the swing of blogging next time you're having a bout of writers block.

Plan Ahead For The Next Bout of Bloggers Block
Once your blogging mojo has returned, take full advantage of it! Take bulk blog photos, edit them and upload them to their respective draft posts. Draft up some of the text and add the relevant links. Even if it's not completely perfect, get down the bare bones of as many blog posts as you can (things like wishlists, tag posts and face of the day posts are quick and easy to do if you want to write some reserve draft posts). That way you always have content that's either ready to be published or only needs a few minor adjustments when you're facing a bout of bloggers block. Even if you go weeks, months or years without ever experiencing it, it's something that I think will happen to most of us at one time or another and can come on quite suddenly. So having some posts reserved for these occasions will help to keep your blog ticking over.

If All Else Fails:
If you can't get over bloggers block because you're dissatisfied with your blog, try and work out what the reasons are. Have you fallen out of love with your topic? Are you disappointed with the amount of views/comments/followers you have? Do you dislike the way your blog looks? Spend some time thinking over exactly what it is you don't like and come up with a plan of action. Can you give your blog design a makeover, or change up the background of your photos? If you usually write about fashion but have become bored with writing about clothes, can your blog take a slightly different turn? Can you branch off into more beauty related topics, or even start writing lifestyle posts? While it can be deflating to see a fall in views or comments or to feel as though people aren't following your blog, these numbers are always going to fluctuate. Remember your reasons for wanting to write a blog in the first place, and remember the time and effort you've already put into it. Plus, once you fall back in love with your blog, the views and comments will probably return too.
