I Don’t Like My Teeth, What Can I Do?

If you don’t like your teeth then don’t worry you certainly aren’t alone! Thousands of people up and down the UK are feeling conscious about their teeth and with smartphones making our lives more visible than ever, those feeling anxious about their smiles are having an even tougher time of it than before. But what do you do about it? And why is having a ‘perfect’ smile so important? Let’s take a closer look.

The Perfect Smile

We’ve been a world obsessed with the perfect smile for a very long time now with the first orthodontic treatment invented in the 1900’s and since then dentistry has gone on to become a serious money maker with it being the largest market of nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. It’s crazy we're obsessed with having perfect teeth, we want them straight and whiter and brighter. In fact there’s even been studies showing that people don’t want to date people with misaligned teeth as if it's an actual personality trait.

I don’t want to get too heavy into all this but you don’t have to dig far into the facts to discover that we’re obsessed with perfect teeth because capitalism and people in suits told us we needed them through advertising. That’s not to diminish the health benefits that come with straight teeth because there are some but would we care if culture hadn’t told us to? And if there was no money to be made, would we all be so set on changing on smiles? Food for thought.

Navigating Truth From False

Body positivity has exploded post pandemic, the message is loud and clear… LOVE YOURSELF EXACTLY HOW YOU ARE. But does this include our smiles? Sure we’ve seen the occasional super model shoot to fame for their wonky smiles, Georgia May Jagger, Keira Knightley and even Zac Efron had a gap in the OG High School Musical but can everyone else be as accepted with a smile that’s less than perfect or should be all be bracing up and whitening all?

It’s hard to navigate the real from the fake online and just because someone is telling us something is now ok? Is it? The truth is… IT'S DOWN TO YOU. The only thing with anything to it is choice. Your smile is yours and if you love it wonky you should keep it that way but if you want to change it then you have the right to invest in Invisalign Fulham and start that journey too.

Approach with Caution

All that I will say is that before you do start to invest money, time and energy into Invisalign Fulham or any other type of dental cosmetics, check in with your W’s - Why now? And what For? Having clear, thought out valid reasons for waiting to change your smile is important and no, just seeing someone on tik tok with nice teeth isn’t a good enough reason. You should feel beautiful with straight teeth or wonky teeth and know that true happiness does not lie in having a perfect smile.
