Finding the Perfect Baby Group for Your Little One's Development

As a new mum on maternity leave with a small baby, it can be really tough to structure your days. With a little one who is constantly changing and growing, no two days are ever the same and it's easy to lose yourself to the constant feeds and sleepless nights. On top of this, it can be incredibly overwhelming to think about how to keep your bundle of joy entertained and stimulated, while taking care of yourself too. That's where baby groups come in! Not only do these groups provide a chance for your baby to see new faces and experience new environments, but they also offer an opportunity for you to connect with other parents who are at the same stage of the journey. Having even one or two things pencilled into your diary can add some much needed structure to your week which can help you to feel more in control. For me, getting out of the house and meeting new people was a game-changer; seeing my baby light up when they were around others and thriving week by week was the best feeling. So if you're feeling like you could use a change of scenery and some new faces in your life, check out Facebook to see what's local to you. Here are a few different types that we've personally tried and loved over the last two and a bit years.

Art and Crafts Groups
These groups are a great way for your baby to get messy and creative while also developing their fine motor skills. From finger painting to sensory play, these groups offer a variety of activities for your little one to explore. We've been to local messy play and art events, as well as a few terms of The Creation Station which are a franchise that run groups up and down the country.

Music Groups
Music groups can be a great option, they tend to be a hit with mums and babies alike. These groups often feature singing, dancing, and instrument play, all of which can help with language development and coordination. Try searching groups like Rhythm Time and Clatterbugs to see what's running locally to you, we used to attend a music group at a local soft play which was super convenient as we could then use the play facilities after.

Free Play Groups
Sometimes, babies just need some unstructured play time to explore and learn at their own pace. Free play groups such as local stay and play's provide a safe space for your little one to play with toys and other babies while you chat with other parents. These types of groups have been some of my favourite to attend since my daughter was born. They're on a drop in basis so no need to book or pay ahead of time, and the environments are relaxed and friendly with no need to keep your child engaged in a particular activity. They can crawl or toddle around and play freely.

Story Groups
Story groups are a great way to engage your baby's imagination and foster a love of reading. Many local libraries offer story groups that are free and open to the public. These groups often feature themed story times, interactive songs, and even puppet shows to bring the stories to life. Plus, it's a great way to introduce your little one to the library and encourage a love of books from an early age.

Educational Groups
If you're looking for a more structured learning environment, an educational group could be a good fit. These groups often focus on specific skills like language development or sensory exploration, and can provide a great foundation for your baby's early education. The educational groups we've attended have all had themes each week which keep your child interested, and have a range of activities from physical to singing to stories and hands on activities.

When choosing a baby group, it's important to consider what will work best for both you and your baby. Look for groups that are age-appropriate, fit into your schedule, and are in a location that's convenient for you. Not every group will be the perfect fit, and since some groups can be expensive it's worth asking if there are any trials available before you commit to booking a term. But don't be afraid to try a few different options until you find the one that works best for your family.
