So many of us are guilty for neglecting our gardens. And there are so many reasons for that- we all have busy lives and the garden can take up a lot of time as well as mental and physical energy. Keeping everything clean, pulling weeds, cutting back shrubs, raking leaves and planting things to look nice are some of the many never ending tasks. But if you're able to, it's well worth working on creating a garden that you enjoy as when the warmer weather hits, getting outside is amazing. Garden parties, family barbecues, alfresco lunches with the kids and relaxing evenings with your partner are all such a novelty during the summer when it's warm.No matter what kind of garden you have, you need to put the right amount of effort in, and the right amount is exactly what you would give to the rest of the home.
Work On The General Maintenance First
Before you do anything else, you need to work on the general maintenance of the garden. This means cutting the grass if you have regular grass, or potentially hosing it down if you have artificial grass. If you’ve got any weeds growing wild around, you need to pull them out by the root to avoid them coming back. Put away any garden tools, do a skip run to get rid of old rubble, bricks and things you don't need. Trim back bushes and give everywhere a jet wash. It’s the basic things like this that will make the most difference, so they are the ones that need doing before you even consider adding anything else.
Add Decking Or A Patio
Another thing to do is add a patio area or even decking. This will give you a separate area to enjoy food and drinks with friends without encroaching on the grass. You can build a timber decking yourself, if you have basic DIY skills. Alternatively, contact local companies and get quotes to see how much it will cost. If you do decide to have decking or patio then also consider investing in a gazebo, this will protect you from the elements in the evenings meaning you can stay out there longer.
Create zones that actually work for your life
Once you’ve got the basics sorted and any big changes done, it’s worth thinking about how you actually want to use the space. Try to picture your day. Do you want somewhere to sit with a coffee in the morning, a spot where the kids can mess around, or maybe a little area to grow herbs for dinner? You don’t need loads of space. You can break things up with planters, a bit of garden furniture, or even a couple of string lights to set the mood in the evening. The idea is to shape the garden around your routine so it feels like part of your home, not just something to look at through the window.
An Eye-Catching Main Feature
Finally, you might want to add an eye-catching feature to your garden space. There are lots of possibilities that are worth exploring here. For instance, you could consider an option like a water feature. This can either come pre-built or you can explore it as a DIY improvement feature for your garden. It largely depends on your level of skill, your budget, and how much time you have available to use for creating a feature like this. There are of course other features that you can consider for your garden as well. For instance, you might want to think about adding a fire pit.. This is a great choice if you are planning on creating an outdoor seating area for you and your guests in the future. You can even go further and design an entire outdoor kitchen space. Again, this is going to depend on your amount of space available and your budget.
