I Heart Drugstore Makeup Tag

Tuesday, November 05, 2013

It's no secret that I love highstreet products; there's always a hidden gem waiting to be found, and any '3 for 2' deal in Superdrug or Boots will draw me in like a crazy makeup obsessed moth to a flame. I love a gorgeous high end product as much as the next person, but when you fancy an inexpensive treat they're just the perfect little pick me up. I don't usually do tag posts but I spotted this one and thought hey lets mix this up a bit- after all I could ramble on about highstreet makeup for hours to anyone I think is vaguely listening (my poor friends, I probably bore them to tears!)

1. What is your favourite drugstore makeup brand overall?
Eeek talk about starting with a difficult one. After MUCH pondering I've come to the conclusion that Rimmel is probably my favourite, just because they do so many lip products that I love: the Kate Moss Range, Colour Show Off range and not forgetting the trusty Apocalips. Sleek is probably a close second though as they're the masters of highstreet eyeshadows and blushes.

2. What are your favourite face, cheek, eye and lip products?
Revlon Colourstay foundation, Rimmel Stay Matte powder, Sleek's blush in Life's a Peach, Collection Lasting Perfection concealer, Sleek Mattes v2 eyeshadow palette, Revlon/MUA/Bourjois lip crayons and Rimmel's Kate Moss lipsticks. There's so many more I could mention, but if I was putting together a makeup bag with only highstreet products that's what I'd include. I don't have a favourite highstreet bronzer, much to the dismay of my bank balance none come close to my beloved Hoola by Benefit!

3. Least favourite product?
I actually struggled thinking of a product for this, maybe I'm easily pleased but I tend to like most of the makeup that I buy. While I generally love MUA I suppose there have been a few things that I haven't really liked- their mascaras are pretty crappy and thought their primer was a watery mess. Their lip products and eyeshadows are all great though, a review of MUA's lipsticks was one of the first posts I wrote on this blog and I still love them now.

4. What is the best makeup bargain?
Probably my Dainty Doll lipsticks and blushes, I spotted them when they were first added to Fragrance Direct so had full pick of all of the shades for just £1.99 each. While I thought some other products in the range were absolute rubbish (what on earth were they thinking trying to charge £11 for a hard, chalky unpigmented eyeliner when everything was full price I don't know- I paid £1 for mine and still felt ripped off). The blushes and lipsticks are lovely though and total bargain for the reduced price too. Most things on Fragrance Direct are amazing bargains, Essie nail polishes for £1.99 each? Score.

5. What is your favourite underdog product? (Something great that often gets overlooked?)
I love George makeup at Asda, I think it's a brand most people would automatically overlook but the products are such great quality. Some of my favourites are their mono blushes and moisturising lipsticks, I've just started using their felt tip liner and it's amazing- review coming soon.

6. A drugstore product that is overpriced?
I think most Revlon and Loreal products are really overpriced, £14+ for a highstreet foundation is pretty obscene if you ask me (but it will never stop me from buying the stuff, because lets face it it's addictive and fun). The products that spring to mind for this question are the Revlon Lip Butters, there's only half the product of a regular sized lipstick and they're more expensive too- errrm, rip off alert! While I have two that I use and think are alright, I have no idea how Revlon have the cheek to put an £8 price tag on them.

7. Show your best drugstore dupe(s)
I found that my favourite everyday lipstick 'Celeb' by Rimmel was a great dupe for my 'Please Me' by Mac. This worked out really well because I can put on Please Me in the morning and throw Celeb in my bag to topup with through the day, and keep my more expensive lipsticks safely in my everyday makeup stash at home. I compared them side by side here.

8. Drugstore product that isn't worth the hype?
As much as I love my Tangle Teezer I don't think they're worth all of the rave reviews they get. Maybe it's because I don't have particularly tangly hair, but it seems to do the same as any normal hairbrush? I use mine every day and have no problem with it, but any standard old brush from Boots would probably do the same job.

  3. oOoh thank you so much for tagging me! I can't wait to get my claws in to this one! I love sleek products so much, I get what you mean about MUA they are a bit hit and miss, I find their eye shadows really hard to work with but love their £1 lippy, can't really go wrong. Ive also never tried anything from Dainty Doll, I always thought they were really targeted toward pale girls which put me off because I'm so exotic :P but I really love their packaging (haha I know stupid reason to want to try something) so might go and see if they have anything which I could pull off. I also really love the name.

    Great post my darl!

    1. No problem I can't wait to read your answers! Dainty Doll products are designed for pale skin but I definitely recommend giving the lipsticks and blushes a go as they'll work with any skin tone :) I'm the same when it comes to packaging, it makes all the difference to whether I want to buy the product haha x

  9. I also have the tangle teezer and it does work better for me than a regular brush as it`s easier to brush through my hair, but it pulls out a lot of them too! Thanks for the tag :) x

  10. I will never understand people say high street makeup is not good at all. I hear that far too often in certain YouTube videos but it can hardly be true. Revlon and Bourjois are such great brands. Rimmel produces the best drugstore lipsticks and some I've found to be better than Mac favourites.

An expensive price tag doesn't always equal great results.

Sleek's blushers are quite good too! The colour lasts a good amount of time. Revlon foundations are a dream! Their Nearly Naked foundation is my favourite but ColourStay used to be my favourite before that. I should start using it again I think.

  12. Great tag! We can never get make up that cheap in Australia, even our average rimmel/revlon/l'oreal lipsticks start at $20-$25 :c My favorite drugstore brand has to be Bourjois, they're the only drugstore brand i consistently purchase from, products ranging from foundation to blush to nail polishes and lipsticks!

  15. Tangle Teezers does wanders for my hair because it's super knotty but I guess if you didn't have super knotty hair you won't feel a dramatic difference so I understand what you mean. I agree with Revlon and L'oreal being overpriced. Here in Australia a Revlon foundation costs $39.95 and L'oreal is about the same... Although I do love some of their products I would prefer to spend another 10 or 20 dollars and buy MAC or another high end brand... Annoying though!

  17. I love Sleek too, I'd like to see it selling more in Italy, not just the palette in limited edition (which, anyway, I'm happy). Buuut I can't agree with the Tangle Teezer since it really breaks less hair while actually smoothing it, and having curly and rebel hair I assure you it's really something worth! But maybe it depends on every person and you're lucky with your hair ^^
