Reduce Your Bathroom Plastic Waste

Plastic is increasingly becoming an issue for our planet. Although it is an extremely useful material, single use plastic is filling up our landfills and greatly harming the environment. Not only this, but wildlife are being harmed or killed by plastic items that are ending up around the land and in the sea. It’s time to make a change, and everybody needs to do it. Reducing your plastic use can actually be a lot easier than you think, which is why I’ve put together a blog on where to start. I’ve teamed up with The English Shaving Company to give you all some advice on reducing your bathroom plastic waste. Keep reading for some simple changes that make a difference!

Toothbrush
Most toothbrushes are made out of plastic, and obviously as they only have about a 3 month life span, throwing out toothbrushes happens often. These end up in landfills and is one of the many plastic sources that come from our bathrooms. Luckily, there is an alternative. Toothbrushes can now be purchased made from bamboo, which are completely biodegradable. This is a fantastic alternative to using plastic toothbrushes and greatly reduces the amount of plastic waste you create.

Tooth tablets
While on the topic of teeth cleaning, you can also replace your toothpaste with tooth tablets. Toothpaste comes in a plastic tube, and as we brush our teeth twice a day, we get through it quite quickly! Tooth tablets offer an alternative to toothpaste that still cleans your teeth without unnecessary plastic waste. They are completely free of binders and preservatives, containing fluoride to leave your mouth feeling extra fresh. They do take some getting used to, but you just need to chew on one of them until it crumbles and then brush with a toothbrush as usual.

Soap & Shampoo Bars
Showergel and shampoo are both culpirates for creating unnecessary plastic waste. You also tend to use more of the product than necessary which wastes money and means you have more plastic waste. Bars of soap are easy to come across and many brands come in cardboard packaging. Make sure to opt for a brand that has completely recyclable cardboard packaging. Shampoo bars are newer and therefore harder to come across, but they are out there. Retail giants Lush offer a range of shampoo bars, so there is something out there for everyone to try.

Shaving
Have you ever considered how much plastic you use with a disposable razor? The results would probably shock you. It is estimated that two billion disposable razors are thrown away every year, which is shocking considering they are not recyclable. If everyone stopped using disposable razors we could be in a much better place than we are right now. Instead of continuing to use disposable razors, switch to a safety razor. Safety razors are a fantastic plastic free shaving alternative that have made a comeback due to their eco-friendly nature. Not only will they help you reduce your plastic waste from your bathroom, they will also help you save money and give you a closer shave. It’s a win win situation!
