Easy ways I'm Refreshing My Bedroom This Summer

I love swapping up my decor with the seasons, especially in summer when everything feels lighter and a bit slower. But I get that’s not for everyone. Not everyone wants to overhaul their space every few months, and it doesn’t need to be that deep- there are simple things you can do if you want a bit of a reset without going all in. For me, the bedroom’s always been one of the most important spaces as it’s where I properly switch off. And after busy days running around after the kids, that is much needed! I read recently that 13.83% of UK homeowners prioritise bedroom renovations when they're refreshing the home which makes sense. It's not a super expensive room to switch up like a kitchen or bathroom but makes a huge difference. When a space feels good, you sleep better and everything runs smoother. Here's how I'll be going about it this year.

Light and Breezy Textures
I always swap out my bedding and soft furnishings when summer rolls in. And the recent heatwave we've had here in the UK has given us some seriously HOT nights, so I'm glad I did this! Heavy throws and darker colours don’t work when it’s warm, and even small changes like lighter sheets or different cushions make the space feel easier to be in. I usually stick to relaxed cottons and linens in neutral shades, not just because they look good but because they breathe better at night.  Switching to a lighter duvet makes a huge difference too, I've recently swapped my duvet for a lower tog and added some white cotton sheets. Anything that reflects the light works better this time of year and gives that fresher, open feel. Layering textures through cushions, throws, or curtains all helps pull the room together without adding clutter.

Rethinking Storage
Clearing out clutter is always top of the list when I’m refreshing a room, and summer’s a good time for it too, since it’s easier to let things go when you’re not buried under your winter coats. I usually start with the wardrobe, putting heavy pieces into storage and keeping just what I’m actually wearing out and  that alone makes the space feel lighter. Thoughtful internal storage like custom wardrobe interiors, can help you store seasonal clothes, shoes, and accessories without sacrificing floor space. I’ve use drawer dividers and separate storage for shoes and bags, which has helped things stay more organised without adding extra furniture. One recent change I've made in the wardrobe is adding motion sensor lights inside so that you can actually see what you're looking for. Highly recommend that everyone considers doing this. According to Good Housekeeping's decluttering experts, starting small helps stop it from feeling overwhelming, and I’ve definitely found that true. Even just sorting drawers or clearing out the top of the wardrobe makes a difference.

Add Greenery and Fragrance
Summer is when I like bringing in more scent and greenery. Lavender, eucalyptus, or even a bit of citrus can change the whole feel of a space without doing much at all- I like the inexpensive Ikea candles and recently bought a few of the eucalyptus ones. Fresh smells help you sleep so much better and just make the room feel more relaxing. A couple of low maintenance plants can do the same even though I'm not the best at keeping them alive! I like peace lilies and snake plants because they’re hard to mess up and still clean the air a bit. Even just a small bunch of flowers in a glass or a reed diffuser with a summer blend adds that fresh feeling without needing to spend much. It’s the kind of change that takes five minutes but makes the room feel completely different.

Do a Proper Deep Clean
One thing I always try to do at the start of each season is a proper clean. Not just the usual surface tidy, but pulling furniture out, hoovering underneath, wiping down skirting boards, that kind of thing. It’s not the most exciting job but it makes everything feel fresher straight away. I’ll usually wash things I forget about during the year, like cushion covers, mattress protectors, or even curtains if they’re easy enough to take down. Opening the windows while you do it helps too. You don’t need loads of fancy products, just a bit of effort and time. It’s the kind of reset that doesn’t cost anything but makes the space feel completely different.
