Why I'm Thinking About Winter Holidays During a Heat Wave!

We all know that many Brits flock to beaches in the summer- we've actually just returned from our family summer holiday and have had the most fantastic week in Menorca. But within days of getting back home I'm doing what any sane person would do- look at booking the next one! The holiday blues haven't kicked in all that badly this year as we returned home to the UK's most epic heat wave, but still, it's always nice to have something on the calendar to look forward to again. I'm currently toying with the idea of a winter break this Christmas, here are some of the options I've discovered while researching.

Booking early pays off
The smaller resorts, places that aren’t packed with tourists and family friendly options tend to get snapped up first. Getting in early means you'll have your pick of the most desirable options, more choice, better prices and less stress closer to the time. Since we're already in July it's cutting it fine, but it will be the sooner the better. Sorting flights, accommodation and ski passes well ahead also makes everything easier. Had we considered this earlier could have spread the cost and avoided last minute scrambles more, but six months is better than one!

Places worth knowing about
Europe is filled with great, under the radar destinations, which is ideal if you're someone like me who has young kids and needs a short flight time. You can avoid the Alpine price tag with Andorra ski holidays to the Pyrenees. It has proper mountains and slopes, good ski schools, and a lively but not overwhelming après ski scene. It’s appears to be a solid option to avoid the high prices often found in Alpine resorts Slovenia keeps coming up as well. Resorts like Kranjska Gora and Vogel offer picturesque slopes with fewer crowds. The area has plenty to explore off the mountain too, including lakes and medieval towns, which makes it a nice balance if skiing isn’t the only plan. In the French Alps, smaller resorts such as La Rosière and Les Houches get good mentions. They offer quality slopes and accommodation but without the inflated prices or busy hotels found in places like Chamonix or Courchevel. These spots feel more manageable and less hectic, which is a big plus for families or those who want something quieter.

Having plans makes things easier
Even if nothing is booked yet, just knowing what’s out there helps. And we all know that there's a real mental boost that comes from planning your next adventure, counting down til you go away and getting excited! As summer holidays end and you get back into work routines, having a winter escape to look forward to can help break up the year into fun segments. Once autumn arrives, things get busy and options narrow quickly. Having a few ideas in mind means less pressure later and something to look forward to when the darker evenings arrive.
