Dr Ash Dutta on top Cosmetic Trends for Men in 2018

The UK market has seen a dramatic rise in the demand for cosmetic surgery since the recession in 2008. In fact, the entire cosmetic surgery industry was valued at over $3.5billion in 2015 and this is growing exponentially. There was a time when the transformation stories related to cosmetic surgery procedures were mostly about women. But now men have stories to recount from their successful transformations and the cosmetic surgery industry that caters specifically to men has grown in leaps and bounds over the past decade. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has reported that whilst men still only account for 9% of all cosmetic surgery operations, a record 4,614 UK men underwent a procedure last year for purely aesthetic reasons. Men are increasingly diving in for cosmetic surgeries in their early to late 30s’ for various reasons. Lifestyle choices and the increasing demand on men to look good further propagated by the media and the movie industry has had men opting for surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. One of the key drivers is A-list celebrities and sports stars (Wayne Rooney in recent times) openly talking about their procedures which have led to an increased acceptance and de-stigmatising of aesthetic enhancement. ‘Moob’ jobs (male breast reduction), hair transplants, beard transplants, blepharoplasty (eyelid reduction that reduces swollen and puffy eyes), nose jobs, liposuctions have all become very popular procedures. Dr Ash Dutta recommends the following 5 treatments for men to feel younger and more confident.

Botox
Men feel increasingly pressured to maintain a more attractive and youthful look in a highly competitive job market, and they don’t want a surgical face lift which needs a long recovery period. Botox is easier, faster and less invasive with no downtime. Botox injectables/ Wrinkle relaxing injections are a non-invasive way to combat the signs of ageing while rejuvenating the skin, diminishing wrinkles and smoothing out fine lines. It is ideal for those men who want healthy, glowing, youthful, and rejuvenated skin without surgery. This non-surgical cosmetic treatment provides great results without the risk or inconvenience associated with a traditional facelift. Botulinum toxin is a highly purified neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It temporarily and safely relaxes the facial muscles softening lines, creases and dynamic wrinkles that occur from repetitive muscle movements. FDA approved, it has many uses and can also temporarily smoothen marionette lines at the corners of the mouth and smoker's lines around the lips. Choose a Surgeon for your cosmetic surgery wisely. You should never choose a surgeon who pressurises you to undergo more treatment than you want or expect. Make sure your expectation and your treatment care plan are in alignment.

Treatment time: This simple and safe procedure generally takes 10 to 20 minutes for the treatment to be carried out and requires no anesthetic.
Cost: At Aesthetic Beauty Centre Wrinkle Relaxing Injections (Botulinum toxin/ Botox®) starts from £150 for one area, £250 for 2 areas & £325 for 3 areas.

Hair Transplant
Most prized in terms of looks for all meá¹… is their hair, both facial and head. When men start losing hair, they panic! Loss of hair has been proven to have a direct psychological effect on most men. This panic often leads initially to a mad scramble for an effective topical treatment, medication and/or supplement but when things go out of hand, they may consider for a hair transplant. Hair loss can be devastating for men and many realize there is a decline in the density of their hair growth after they have lost about 40%. Sadly it is a permanent condition, and it’s likely that it will worsen without the intervention of surgery. Hair transplantation surgery is considered a permanent and reliable solution for male pattern baldness (genetic hair thinning) and it has become hugely popular as it is known to deliver a natural looking result. It can help to restore a full head of hair. It is successful in men who have hair loss but who have healthy hair growth at the donor site (the back and side of the head) from which the grafts are taken. This common procedure is done by harvesting DHT (the hormone which inhibits hair growth) resistant hair from the back of your own scalp (the donor area) and then transplanting it into the balding areas (on the head or face,in the case of a beard transplant). The implanted hair should grow and stay, because it is unaffected by the factors that cause Androgenic Alopecia (male pattern baldness).

The procedure is mainly performed via either of the following two methods :
The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method
The FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method.

Follicular Unit Extraction is a minimally invasive technique for hair transplantation in which follicular unit grafts (hair roots) are individually removed from the patient’s donor area (the area in the back and sides of the scalp where hair is more resistant to balding) using a punch and then individually inserted into the recipient (balding) area. Follicular Unit Transplantation (also known as strip surgery) is a hair restoration technique in which a strip of skin having small clusters of hair or follicular units are removed from the donor area of hair and inserted into the recipient area (the bald area of your head) as individual follicular units which are naturally occurring in the groups of 1-4 hairs. But in both type of techniques you should have hairs in your donor area. If you are totally bald then we have an option at Aesthetic Beauty Centre - Biofibre Hair Implant. Biofibre is biocompatible (compatible with the human body) artificial hair which is CE Certified for Hair Implant. It is a safe and effective medical technique to combat the baldness problem. This technique is suitable for any age and even for those who are completely bald. It is also popular among those who are not suffering from a significant level of hair loss but simply wish to enjoy fuller, thicker-looking hair. These hair implants look identical to natural hair. They are very resistant and do not break easily. This implant is recommended for hair thinning or androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), scarring alopecia. It can be used in conjunction with other hair restoration techniques when required.

Surgery time: The FUE process can take between 4-8 hours and in large sessions, may be accomplished over two consecutive days.
Cost:
Hair Transplant FUE – £3.50 1st 500 Grafts- £3.25 subsequent grafts
Hair Transplant FUT – £3.00 1st 500 Grafts -£2.50 subsequent grafts

VASER Liposuction
While going to the gym and building a body is the dream for most meá¹…, it does not always happen. Some don't seem to find the time or enough motivation to spend hours in a gym while the others who hit the gym are frustrated with resistant pockets of fat (fat that does not go away even with exercise). Some then opt for a surgical intervention to contour their body, which is minimally invasive and involves little downtime. In most of the men beyond their 30s, fat deposits tend to build up in the abdomen, love handles, thighs, hips, arms and/or chest. Even men who are a healthy weight can have unwanted fat pockets in these areas which are very hard to shift despite attempts with diet and/or exercise. Vaser Liposuction is a the most popular and most advanced surgical method to remove excess fat from the body, and suits those who have a healthy lifestyle; regular exercise and good diet. VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy) liposuction is an advanced body contouring, ultrasonic technique for fat removal which offers a safe alternative to traditional liposuction. It works well in creating a defined and sculpted body. Your surgeon breaks up and emulsifies fat prior to removal by an ultrasound probe which facilitates the liposuction process and reduces pain. VASER liposuction combines ultrasonic waves (inaudible sound wave) with liposuction technology to precisely break up and liquefy/emulsify targeted fat without disrupting connective tissue, nerves or blood vessels, safely removing the stubborn body fat. This technique causes minimal to no damage to the surrounding tissue, resulting in a limited bruising and a shorter recovery time.

Surgery time: The length of the procedure can vary depending on the treatment area and the amount of fat to be removed, but each session usually takes around 1-2 hours.
Cost:

Vaser Lipo - Small Area: £2500
Vaser Lipo - Large area: £2750
Vaser Lipo - Large + Small Area: £3400
Vaser Lipo - Large + Small + Small Area: £4150
Vaser Lipo - Large + Large Area: £3900
Vaser 4D: £4000
VASER Hi Def: £4000

Blepharoplasty
It's a well known fact, that the first signs of age always show mostly around the eyes. As we grow older, it's not uncommon to develop upper and lower eye bags. Thanks to Blepharoplasty, you can now regain that youthful appearance which occur due to drooping eyelids. The ASPS indicates that between 2010 and 2015, rates of men undergoing blepharoplasty increased by 34 percent. Eye bags are caused by loose skin and relaxed muscles in the eyelids, usually a sign of age creeping upon us. Also surplus fatty tissue can cause the upper eyelid to become hooded. Drooping eyelids is a cosmetic one for most of the patients, but some people experience a loss of peripheral vision because of the drooping skin. Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure which is generally done under local anesthesia. During surgery, the surgeon cuts the fold/bags of the eyelid to remove excess skin, muscle and fat, then stitches out the incisions. Because the incision is done on the fold or directly under the lashes on the lower eyelid, scarring is properly hidden . Surgery has minimal downtime and a fast recovery generally less than one week.

Surgery time: The procedure takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
Cost:
Blepharoplasty (Upper & Lower) £3500
Blepharoplasty (Upper Eyelid) £2250
Blepharoplasty (Lower Eyes) £2500

Gynecomastia Correction Surgery
The majority of men, these days, are image conscious and would love to take off their shirts when on the beach. However some don’t feel comfortable with doing this because of a condition called Gynecomastia (enlargement of male breasts). This usually occurs due to excess breast tissue/glandular tissue growth with or without excess fatty tissue. These enlarged male breasts have a hard lump under the nipple which can also extend outside the borders of the areola depending on how much excess tissue is there. The enlarged breasts are firm, irregular and sometimes even painful to touch. Basically it occurs due to a high level of estrogen (female hormone) to testosterone in men. If you are suffering from gynecomastia then surgery may be your only option. However, if you don’t want surgery then you can also use gynecomastia shirts or gynecomastia pills (you’ll need to visit your GP). But the success rate of non-surgical treatments depend on the severity of the problem and are at best only temporary solutions. Generally gynecomastia is treated by surgical gland excision along with liposuction but in severe cases of gynecomastia, the perfect contour can be achieved through a combination of fat removal, glandular tissue excision, and skin tightening of the sagged breasts. Gynecomastia surgery typically requires only a couple of hours for recovery. The patient can return home after the surgery, and often resume normal activities after a few days. Exercise, bathing and swimming should be avoided for at least two weeks, and any strenuous exercise or lifting for six weeks.

Surgery time: The surgery can take 1-2 hours to complete which depends on the method of treatment (eg. Gland removal and/or Vaser Lipo) and the severity of the condition.
Cost:
Pseudogynecomastia – Vaser liposuction for fat removal only: price starts from £2000
Gynecomastia – Gland excision price starts from £2500
Gynecomastia – Gland removal with skin excision price starts from £4500
For sub-areola reduction with liposuction or excision price starts from £4000

What’s important to understand here is that the results of these treatments/procedures in the right hands can be subtle, natural-looking and enhance one’s confidence. However please do remember that surgery is life-changing - and to a large extent irreversible - and is not a ‘status symbol’ beauty treatment. Also a surgical procedure is not something that can be simply returned to the shop if you do not like it. The decision to undergo any surgery must be well thought-out, following a thorough consultation with the right doctor (do your research- look at before afters, testimonials etc to understand the credibility of a surgeon), and realistic expectations.
