Take The Stress out of Getting Dressed

I think most of us can relate to the phrase "a wardrobe stuffed full of clothes, but still nothing to wear." Whether you hoard clothes because you feel bad throwing things away that have hardly been worn, or you're hoping that one day certain garments will magically fit you again, there are bound to be at least a few things in your wardrobe that you're hanging on to regardless of how unfashionable or ill fitting they are. How easily could you get yourself dressed if you had to be somewhere important in an hour? Would you be able to effortlessly pick out an outfit, or would everything you own be pulled out and thrown on the 'no way am I wearing that' pile? Making sensible choices with the clothing items you choose to buy can really take the stress out of getting dressed. Key pieces should fit well, suit your body shape and be versatile in the way they can be worn. Your staple garments will be able to be dressed up, dressed down, and stay beautifully on trend season after season. When we're shopping, it's easy to reach for items we like the look of rather than considering how useful they will be as part of our wardrobe. The following items are what I would consider 'essentials' and are basically the boring things we don't tend to think about when buying new clothes. However, armed with these you are sure to have an outfit for almost every occasion.

Classic Black Trousers
Depending on what you wear on your top half and your shoes, black trousers can get you from every occasion from a funeral to a wedding. The exact cut will depend on your body shape, although a boot cut fit will flatter most figures. Black trousers might not be the type of thing you reach for on a day to day basis, but when certain occasions crop up you'll be glad to have them in your wardrobe.

Jeans, Leggings or Jeggings.
These are dependable, and you can reach for them time and time again knowing they'll go with just about anything. These are staple bottoms which can be worn in a variety of different ways depending on the occasion. They can be worn with a t-shirt and some pumps in the daytime for a casual look, or a blazer and tucked into boots for something a bit more formal. If you're not a fan of jeans (like me), get some good quality jeggings instead. I own so many pairs of leggings and wear them almost every day, I absolutely love them.

Casual Day Dress
Perfect on summer days with oversized sunglasses and gladiator sandals, and when it's slightly more chilly they can be worn over leggings with ballet pumps and a cardigan. A carefully selected day dress is a great casual daytime staple, which can even take you through to evening with the right accessories. I love dresses, they're so easy to wear they make up most of my wardrobe.

Going Out Dress
If you go out regularly you'll need a few of these, but even if you don't it's good to always be prepared with going out dress. The cut depends on your level of confidence, but something that's classy (not too short or low cut) is age appropriate and flatters your body shape will be perfect for any occasion that requires you to get glammed up and look your best.

A Fitted Jacket/ Blazer
The perfect fitted jacket is so versatile, it can be worn in the daytime with leggings or jeans or over a dress in the evening. Blacks, greys and neutrals are good colour choices, and although they might seem boring will match almost every outfit and can be dressed both up or down. Making sure it's is a good fit is essential, always make sure you can do up all of the buttons and can raise your arms without it feeling too tight.
Basic T-shirts and Vest tops
Making sure you have some basic staple tops means you'll have something to wear all year round, regardless of season or current trends. A basic t-shirt with a pair of jeans is great for days when you just feel dressing casually, and can be worn with different accessories for different looks. Vests are good for layering, and a black and a white will work with most outfits.

Good Underwear
Are you guilty of wearing the wrong size bra? Ill fitting underwear can really spoil an otherwise nice outfit. Throw away any that don't fit, get measured and invest in some decent bras. Boring as they are, plain, seamless t-shirt bras can be worn under any top without pattens or lace showing through. The last thing you want is a lacy red or leopard print number showing through your nice white t-shirt.
Comfortable Flat Shoes
These are what you'd wear with your jeans or leggings day to day, and are something you're able to do a fair amount of walking in without getting sore feet. They could be plimsols, ballet pumps anything you like that is likely to go well with the rest of your wardrobe.
10. Killer Heels.
These can be worn with jeans, trousers or a dress and can take an outfit from day to night. Go for a height you can comfortably walk in, and always get them re-heeled regularly.

The best thing you can do is be prepared, and stock up on the things you wear the most. For example if you know you live in your leggings make sure you have plenty of pairs and replace them whenever it's necessary. If you know casual plain t-shirts are your thing, buying a load of fancy embellished tops you're never going to wear isn't the most sensible choice.
