Is A 5-Year Old Car Really That Old?

We are seeing the future develop before our eyes in the world of automobiles. What is fast becoming the norm, was cutting edge technology in cars just 5 years ago. There are some brands that can take full kudos for the innovations they made and brought to the customers. Brands like Land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes and Ford all made substantial progress in the hybrid cars that now, everybody else is following. Times have changed and car design moves fast. Once upon a time a car that was 10-years old wasn’t that old. In fact it was actually seen as a modern variant of that model. However since the rapid expansion of plants, increase in designs and incredible leaps and strides in technological advancement, ‘old’ cars are seen as maybe even 5-years old. But, if you pick and choose your car right, is 5 years really that old?

The advent of litre per 100bhp
If you pay attention to motorsport, you’ll know that turbocharged cars have always produced monumental power for the size of their engine displacement. The F1 turbo era cars produced over 1,000bhp from just 1.5-litre engines. However they weren’t built to last and thus, their 100bhp per litre wasn’t really relevant for road use. Cue 2010, when finally this technology made it's way onto the normal streets. Now you had cars that were 2.0 or 3.0 litres making 200-300bhp+, as well as having electric motors. The electric motors would be used for low speed driving such as in cities while the combustion engine was used for faster driving such as over 30mph. Look at the cars that are on the Affordable-Cars website such as the BMW 2d which is an inline-6 3.0-litre engine pushing out 309bhp. Built in 2015, it's performance is still relevant in today’s market.

Aerodynamic & eco-friendly
The cars of this era looks far more sleek and very aerodynamic. Cars that have sharper edges while also preserving strategic curves to aid the model cutting through the air, were actually born in the early part of this decade. They came about around 2011-12 whereby internal space was maximised while making sure the exterior of the car was designed for a more aerodynamic shape. Not only would the cars look more agile and sporty, but they would also save the owner on fuel costs as less wind resistance means less fuel is used to create enough energy to maintain speed. Now we have rear diffusers, side air channels and smaller radiators that allow the cars to slice through the air on the motorway even easier. So with regards to styling and eco performance the cars from just 5 years ago are still relevant and brilliant to drive.

Some cars from 5 years ago put modern cars to shame. There has been some cost cutting going on in some brands but the majority have learned from lessons they learned in 2015. Thus cars that are this old, will still be stylish and technologically capable for the modern car owner.
