How To Introduce A Pet Into Your Home

Bringing a pet into your home is one of the most exciting things in the world, especially if it's your first pet. Not only can having a pet in your home be incredibly fun but it's also someone you can shower with love and affection and spend your time with. After all, more and more of us are spending time stuck at home so having someone around to cuddle can make a big difference! Of course, bringing a new pet into your home isn't always easy. They're often confused and unsure of what exactly is going on and they can often be pretty frightened. With that in mind, here are some ways that you can introduce a new pet into your home as smoothly as possible.

Give them their own space
It might be tempting to cuddle up to your new pet and give them as much love as possible right away but most animals really don't want that when they're in a new place. The reality is that you have to give them their own space. This might mean setting out a corner of the living room with a dog's bed it in to let them curl up and feel comfortable, or it might mean letting a cat stay hidden when they run under a cupboard to hide. Eventually, they will venture out of their safe little space and explore a bit more but it's important that you let them do so at their own pace.

Make them feel safe
Finding themselves in a new place can be stressful enough for an animal without anything else adding to it. This means that you've got to try and create the calmest, most safe feeling environment for them possible. Avoid things like loud music or having the TV on at high volume. Try to avoid people coming and going a lot of the time. If the environment can be as peaceful as possible when they're getting used to it, they're going to be able to do so a whole lot faster.

Make things comfortable for you too
Of course, it's not all about them. You have to remember that your life is going to be impacted as well. It's important that you make sure that you're comfortable as well. This might mean setting boundaries like not allowing pets to jump on the furniture. Or maybe you've realised that your new pooch is causing a bit of a stink wherever they go and dog breath freshener is the answer. Your home is a place where you and your new pet should be able to live happily together.

One thing that you have to remember is that bringing a pet into your home is a process. As nice as it would be for them to get comfortable and feel totally happy from minute one, that's not really how things work a lot of the time. The key is to be patient with them and let them do things at their own pace. They'll be feeling right at home before you know it.
