History
Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu dates back to 1986 when master Carlos Gracie Jr. founded the first Gracie Barra school in Barra da Tijuca, a few kilometers from Rio de Janeiro. Instead of naming the school after himself, Carlos decided to call it after his family’s name combined with the school's area. Carlos involved other members of the Gracie family in acting as instructors in his new school. Many of his new instructors later moved to many corners of the world to open their schools, hence Jiu-Jitsu's spread. Today, you can find the original Gracie Barra in a fitness gym a few blocks from the beach in Barra de Tijuca. Prof. Jefferson Moura now heads Gracie Barra, and it continues to attract international students who wish to learn the highest level of technical training. Master Carlos Gracie Jr. now has a goal to start a Jiu-Jitsu school in every city in the world. Currently, Gracie Barra has branches in North America, Central America, South America, Oceania, and Europe.
