Tips For Moving to a Rural Area

There’s a lot of value in living in a cosmopolitan area. You’ll have convenience, and access to some of the world’s best art, music, and more, especially if you live in one of the major UK cities. However, there are obvious downsides to living in a big city. They can be crowded, expensive, and noisy, for example. It’s for this reason that many people are looking to move to rural areas. It’s a thought that crosses many people’s minds at some point or another. If you’re thinking about making the move, then take on board the following tips, which will help ensure that the move is nothing but successful!

Try It Out
It can be quite a big culture shock to go from the city to the countryside. Indeed, if you’ve never lived in the countryside, then you’ll probably find it a pretty big culture shock -- it can be easier to move to a city abroad than it is to move to a rural area. As such, it’s recommended that you try it out before committing to it. Could you rent a place for three/six months first? Ideally, make the time stretch over a couple of seasons, so you can get a feel for what the area is like at different times of the year.

Find a Place
If you find that you enjoy rural life, then it’ll be time to look at getting a place. This is as difficult as finding a place to live anywhere else. You’ll also need to think about what type of community you want to live in if any at all. When you buy a house in the countryside, you’ll have the option of living among other people (in a village, for example) or getting a house that’s without neighbours for many miles (this is “the remote” option).

Modern Touches
There will be some elements of life in a rural area that feel like you’re moving back in time. But it’s not as if remote areas are cut off from all the essentials of modern life. It’s just that you might have to work to bring them into your life. Because the internet won’t automatically be available wherever you live, you’ll need to discover rural broadband. This will allow you to work remotely, or, if that’s not required, just keep up to date with all that’s going on in the city.

Invest in Clothing
A big tip: invest in clothing. When you live in a rural area, you’ll encounter more rain and mud and so forth than you would in the city. So your city-slicker clothing won’t do it. A good pair of wellington boots and some waterproof clothing are essential. You’ll wear them more than you think!

Give It Time
Finally, be sure to give it time to adjust to the move. Even if you know it’s the right move; you’ll still face some difficulties, doubts, and so forth. They’ll pass -- and sooner or later, you’ll realise you’re very happy that you made the move!
