Getting Your Toddler Ready for Preschool: Skills to Teach Before the Big Day

As parents, we all want to set our little ones up for success in every aspect of their lives, and this of course includes in their education. And what better place to start than before they even step foot into the classroom? While preschool will start their journey into schooling and they'll learn so much, it's crucial that they have a foundation of knowledge and understanding to build upon so there are things you can work with them at home to achieve. Here are some of the key skills you can teach your toddler before they start preschool that will help them thrive.

Pencil Power
One of the most important skills your toddler will need before starting preschool is the ability to hold and control a pencil. This is a critical step in learning to write, draw, and complete other important tasks in the classroom. To help your tot build up their fine motor skills, try giving them opportunities to play with different types of writing utensils, like crayons, markers, and, of course, pencils. You can also encourage them to practice writing, tracing, and drawing simple shapes and lines.

Toilet Time
Potty training is a big milestone for any toddler, and it's one that you want to tackle before preschool starts. Not only will it save you from those last-minute bathroom runs, but it will also help your little one feel more independent and confident in the classroom. If you haven't started potty training yet, now is the time! If you're in the middle of the process, keep up the good work and be patient—your tot will get there eventually.

Food for Thought: Mealtime Independence
Preschool is a busy time, and your tot will need to be able to feed themselves independently in order to keep up with the pace. Before they start school, make sure they can use utensils, drink from a cup, and eat without making a huge mess. You can practice mealtime independence by having your tot help you prepare food, encouraging them to feed themselves, and letting them make mistakes (and clean them up!) along the way.

Social Skills
Preschool is a great place for your tot to make new friends, but it's also a big change. To help them feel more confident and comfortable in social situations, encourage them to play with other children, whether it's at the park, in a playgroup, or with cousins. Show them how to take turns, share, and be kind to others, and they'll be well on their way to making lifelong friends in the classroom.

Encouragement and Support For Big Dreams and Confidence
Lastly, the most important thing you can do for your tot before they start preschool is to encourage and support them. Let them know that you believe in them and that you're proud of all the skills they've learned. Reading books together about starting preschool and talking it through can let them know what to expect and ensure they hit the ground running on their first day.

Teaching your tot these skills before they start preschool will help them feel confident, independent, and ready to take on the world.
