Surviving the 4 Month Sleep Regression!

Ah, the 4-month sleep regression. It might sound like a science fiction movie, but it's a real thing, and can be such a struggle for new parents! It's something that we personally experienced, and was possibly one of the most challenging periods of that first year. If you're reading this, chances are you've either just gone through it or are in the thick of it right now and are wondering what to do. While it's no walk in the park, know that there's light at the end of the tunnel (even if the tunnel feels really, really long right now!)

What is the 4 month sleep regression?
So, what is the 4-month sleep regression? Basically, it's a period of time (usually around 4 months of age) when your little one who has been sleeping through the night suddenly starts waking up frequently and crying for no apparent reason. It's like they've forgotten how to sleep. Just when you think you're getting the hang of this parenting thing, BAM, the 4-month sleep regression hits and turns your world upside down.

Why does the 4 month sleep regression happen?
The 4-month sleep regression is caused by a number of changes happening in your baby's brain and body. At this age, babies are experiencing a huge growth spurt and their sleep patterns are changing as a result. They're also starting to develop a stronger sense of separation anxiety and can become more aware of their surroundings, which can disrupt their sleep.

How long does the 4 month sleep regression last?
So, how long does the 4-month sleep regression last? Unfortunately, it can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. It's like a tornado that just keeps going, and you never know when it's going to end. For us, it lasted right around a month, meaning that four to five month postpartum period is a time particularly that sticks in my mind. But don't worry, it will eventually pass and your baby will be back to sleeping through the night (fingers crossed!)

What can you do during this time?
Now, for the big question: what can you do to survive the 4-month sleep regression? While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, here are a few tips that might help:

Stick to a routine
Having a consistent bedtime routine can help your baby feel calm and ready for sleep. It can also help you to maintain some sanity too as you have some idea about what to expect over those difficult evenings and nights. A wind-down routine that includes a warm bath is always good- for both you, and for baby.

Offer comfort
Your baby might need extra cuddles and comfort during this time, sometimes all they'll want is to just be held. Which is exhausting for you, but believe it or not, these long nights are something that you will eventually look back on and miss!

Try white noise
The sound of a fan or white noise machine can help block out any distractions and promote a peaceful sleep environment. This was a lifesaver for us, we still play white noise all night in our daughters room and she'll be three this year. Thankfully she's now an excellent sleeper and I'm finally catching up on those earlier times of lost sleep.

Be patient
I know it's easier said than done, but try to be patient and remember that this is just a temporary phase. There are lots of ups and downs when it comes to raising babies but this time period is a particularly tricky one, it's not always this hard.

Overall, the 4-month sleep regression can be a difficult time for new parents, but just know that you're not alone.  Just take it one day at a time, and don't forget to take care of yourself too. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. Stay calm, be patient, and know that it will eventually end. And in the meantime, try to catch some z's whenever you can!
