There are always going be times in life where you're going to need to give yourself a break- literally and figuratively. You can’t be 'go go go' all of the time, that leads to burnout and poor mental health which isn't what anyone needs. Most of us do so much for other people (especially when you're a parent) but you deserve to take care of yourself in the same way. And tthat means giving yourself a break sometimes, even when it feels like you can’t. Here are a few simple ways to do it.
A Night Off
If you have children, it's so nice to get out for a little while and do something fun. Not all of us are blessed with a village when it comes to childcare and it can be really hard to get this sort of time. But even once in a blue moon, if you get the opportunity for a few hours then go for it. You could watch a comedian, go to dinner, go to the cinema- the kinds of things you can't do with kids. It can be worth asking family or friends for their help, maybe arrange a childcare swap where you look after friends or family's children for a few hours and they do the same back. Or maybe you could look into local nannies, babysitters and nurseries and see if you can pay for a few hours. There might ways to make it work you hadn't thought of.
More Time For Hobbies
It’s important to dedicate time to your hobbies if you can. These sorts of things can help to keep your mind sharp, help you to build skills and just allow you to relax and have fun. Hobbies can be a way to keep a bit of 'you' too when you dedicate so much of your life and time to others. It's not selfish, it's one of the best ways to care for yourself and keep your cup flowing so you can then pour into others.
Say No Sometimes
It's hard when you want to be everything for everyone, but you really should say no sometimes. It can mean declining plans, doing favours or anything you need to protect your peace. It doesn't mean you're selfish and you don't have to do it in a mean or abrupt way, politely saying 'no I can't do that, I'm sorry' can go a long way in keeping you sane. So many of us do things we'd rather not and then carry resentment because of it, and let it eat into our limited time. So do what you can to stop this being an issue.
