We have no idea why we’re actually here right now. It’s an odd little place we’ve been placed on. A big circle spinning wildly through absolute nothingness isn’t something we as a species have been able to fathom completely yet. That said, all we can do is live our lives and keep ourselves occupied for the eighty-some years we’re here. You know as well as anyone that when we idle, we may as well be going backwards. You know this because you’ve lived long enough and have probably done it before – everyone has. It’s nice to halt proceedings for a little while so that we can relax, but hitting a complete stoppage does nobody any good. You become physically less motivated to push on, and mentally, you can be negatively impacted. If you’ve currently hit a brick wall in life, then we feel for you. Nobody deserves to be unhappy with where they are. The constant overthinking and the element of self-doubt continually plaguing you is no place for a healthy human. What can you do, though? How can we get your motor running once again? Obviously, every single person has a different way of viewing things, but here are some ways a person can get out of an annoying standstill.
Recognize That It’s All Okay
At this stage, your head is probably thinking about a lot of things – mainly negative ones. It’s totally normal, even if it is super annoying. We start to think that time is running out and that we’ll never be able to get out of this hole we’re in. This catastrophic thinking won’t help you; it’ll only make you worry even more. Recognize that where you are is fine, it might not be the perfect scenario that your mind wants, but you’re not in a position of disgrace.
Don’t Feel Sorry For Yourself
Another thing we like to do when things get a little rough is to mope around and feel sorry for ourselves. This is another activity that literally gets us nowhere. Nobody is going to spoon-feed us what we want, so we may as well stiffen that upper lip and get doing something. When we don’t know where to go in life, the least we can do is the basics. Keep yourself busy by doing domestic stuff or go to the store. Perhaps look online for things to do (like you’re doing now by reading this post!)
Clean Up Your Home
You can always do SOMETHING productive – even if it is a very menial task. A famous and common thing to do now in order to make yourself feel better and more organized is to make your bed. If it’s not done already, go ahead and clean it up a bit. It’ll give you the impetus to push on and do more things. They teach this kind of thing in the armed services. If you have this kind of basic stuff handled, it’ll more than likely be a catalyst for more productivity.
Get Back To School!
You’re never too old, and it’s never too late to learn something new. Filling your brain with new stuff not only enhances you as an already skilled person, but it gives you the confidence to go out and attack the world some more. Whether you’re heading to Rutgers University or your local community college, that intake of information will improve your life. You never know, it could solve all of your problems: you could get a new career out of it, or you could meet new, pivotal, influential people.
Take A Vacation
If you have the funds and the time to spare, then getting out and away from your current situation for a little while wouldn’t hurt you, surely? Seeing more of the world or just relaxing away from all of the stress and overthinking is going to improve your quality of life. Happiness is key – that’s what this life is all about, after all.
Set Mini-Goals
You obviously have your main goals in life that you want to reach, and the distance from the destinations is what’s bringing on this little crisis. So why not move the goalposts a little? Create little goals that you can simply achieve over the course of a day, a week, or a month. Completing challenges makes us all feel good. It’s also an addictive feeling, so it’ll make you want to keep working at them. If your self confidence is low, consider practices like trying new things to push out of your comfort zone, make new friends- or if you're struggling and need professional help, CBT for self-esteem can be life changing.
Apply For Lots Of Stuff!
Just do it. Put yourself everywhere. You’re not going to get every single opportunity you apply for, so you may as well increase the volume. Would you rather apply for a select few places and get nothing or apply for many more and be granted potential roles? As we alluded to before, failure isn’t a bad thing. Learn to enjoy it – it’s how we progress.
