Mac lipsticks- £15.00 each available here

I had my eye on both of these shades this time last year but never ended up taking the plunge and ordering them- this time I knew I had to get my mitts on them for autumn and winter. While I did intend on treating myself to one at a time, I literally couldn't decide which one I wanted first- and so I did what any irrational makeup fiend would do and ordered them both. Due to the (horrifically devastating) fact that I don't have a Mac counter in the city that I live, I'd never swatched either of these myself before buying them. But oh boy they didn't disappoint; both are packed with pigmentation, and the colours are just as gorgeous as what I hoped for.

Ruby Woo is a matte formulation; even though I do often battle with dry lips, this is still one of my favourite formulations. You know that once you have it on it's not going anywhere for a good while, and there's less chance of it ending up smeared down your face or on your teeth (as attractive as that look may be...) This really is such a beautiful product, the bold red shade paired with the matte formulation looks so stunning; if you saw my recent post you'll know I already have other reds that I love, but I think this honestly tops them all. It's the perfect, classic statement red lipstick. On a slightly less positive note it's practically impossible to apply this directly to your lips from the bullet because it drags so much, but then again with a bold red shade like this it never hurts to apply it with a lip brush for that extra precision anyway. I use the Real Techniques detailer brush for this because it's small and pointed meaning you can get a really clean outline (I knew I'd find a use for the stupid thing eventually- ha). If I knew I was going to be out for the day or night and wanted to wear this shade, I'd probably bring a different red to topup with- one that could easily be swiped on the lips straight from the bullet.

Rebel is a Satin finish, as you can see by the lip swatches it's a lot more glossy than Ruby Woo. Because it's semi-matte though the lasting power is still pretty good, it lasts for longer than your average creme lipstick. While this looks undoubtedly terrifying in the bullet, it translates to the lips as a much more wearable fuschia/berry shade, and isn't the dark gothic purple that you might expect from looking at it. If it's still a bit too scary for your tastes, there's always the option to wear darker shades like this as a stain anyway by applying a small amount and blotting the excess. While it's by no means an exact dupe, the colour of Rebel isn't worlds away from MUA shade 2- so if you're looking for a budget berry lipstick in a similar tone head down to Superdrug with a shiny new pound.

  7. Oh I love MAC lip colors. What I like about the Ruby is that it is more of a mattee finish, I pair it with a colorless lip gloss to add more volume!

  11. I'm glad you decided to get both in the end, best choice when you can't decide! ;) Rebel is one of my favourite lipsticks and I agree that while it does look pretty scary in the bullet, I find it to be really wearable and should probably wear it more than I do! I love the look of Ruby Woo, it looks like a great staple red!
